Amanuensis was the word I went to look up in the OED that lay open on a ledge in my father's office.

"a literary or artistic assistant, in particular one who takes dictation or copies manuscripts"

I really ought to get me one of those.

Then, assibilate, or "to pronounce with a hiss or sibilant" caught my eye.

Interesssssting. The word itself provides one with such an opportunity!

Aveniform?

"having the appearance of oats"

Huh. Who knew something other than oats could look like oats? I'm glad I don't look like oats. Wait, maybe I do?

Before I could catch myself, I was at the bottom of a wild-and-woolly rabbit hole, wondering how many other hyphenated idioms I'd missed on my way down.

I had no choice but to return whence I began.

Oh the time you can waste when you've finished Orange is the New Black and renounced social media!
